The Malnutrition Tracker

Nutrition Projects

To improve everyone’s ability to track nutrition interventions and better support the children we serve, we have developed a malnutrition tracking platform designed to replace the traditional, paper-based field data collection and analysis process.

In the fourth quarter of 2019, the TBR team conducted 10 health camps with the malnutrition tracker, using it to gather data for 1231 children across 31 centres in 2 states. The team has also started a series of field studies to explore expanding the tracker use to field health workers and anganwadi workers to enable them to conduct health evaluations without the TBR team being physically present. Doing this will allow our partners to monitor and evaluate nutrition interventions in real-time.

Anganwadi children

Malnutrition is rampant in India, but actionable data is not easy to come by. The malnutrition tracker helped TBR and our partners see first-hand the efficacy of different nutrition interventions on child development. Data is the key to effective policy and decision making and, thanks to the malnutrition tracker, partners developed key insights into their programs. TBR’s nutrition program started with 9 anganwadis in 2018 and in a span of 2 years has expanded successfully to over 200 anganwadis and public schools (both residential and regular schools).

Cancer and HIV victims

For a prominent hospital, in Mumbai treating cancer victims, a big concern was getting adequate nutrition to young patients during their chemo and/or radiation therapy. In 2014 they started a pilot project through TBR and found that with the right formulation and flavouring, patients were sticking to their meal plans more often and had better recovery rates. This pilot began with 100 meals as part of the study, and has now grown to 3,000 meals!

On the other side of the city, a well-known Charity Trust in Thane was working to better the lives of children affected by HIV. Through data they found out a direct co-relation to studying ability, overall enthusiasm, and exam scores. With nutritional intervention, they were able to improve overall health of their beneficiaries, which led to improved mental states, class attendance, and overall scores! The project almost immediately grew from 50, to 110 children.

This is what one project co-ordinator had to say “I am very glad to hear the positive impacts from the children who are taking the porridge regularly. Weight gain, better health conditions and good physique are seen as an outcome. I thank and appreciate the entire team associated with The Breakfast Revolution for such a great noble effort.”
